Wouldn’t you like to earn some extra money? This can be especially important if you’re facing a staggering mountain of debt. It’s very discouraging to wake up every morning knowing that you owe $20,000, $25,000 or even more and have no idea as to how you’ll ever pay it back.
The conventional solution – get a second job
Almost every financial expert says that if you’re deeply in debt, the best thing you can do is get a second job and use that money to pay off your debts. But what if you can’t get a part time job? If this is the case, here are nine somewhat unusual ways that you or your partner could earn extra money.
Clean offices evenings
There are lots of offices out there and they all need cleaning. Best of all, they need to be cleaned nights. You would work just a few hours Monday through Friday and earn some nice extra cash.
Do Pet sitting
Most people love two things – their pets and to take vacations. Kennels generally charge $40 or more a day. You could undercut them by offering to pet sit for $30 or even $25 a day. You could maybe even do this while still holding down your day job.
Offer Internet research
If you really know your way around the Internet, you could offer your skills to do research for local businesses. You might have to give away your services at first to build a reputation but after than you should be able to charge $25 or more an hour – just for sitting in front of your computer.
Substitute teach
Every school needs substitute teachers for those times when one gets sick or needs to take his or her child to the doctor or dentist. Talk to several schools, including the private ones, to see what requirements you would have to have and how much extra income you could expect to earn.
Do home services or run errands
There are a lot of really busy people who just don’t have time to drop off and pick up dry cleaning, walk their dogs or do other simple tasks. I know of one woman who makes good money by picking up here client’s kids after school and taking them to the dentist, their athletic activities, the library and then home.
Buy and sell antiques
If you know antiques, there’s good money to be made buying them cheap at garage and estate sales and flea markets and then reselling them on eBay, which you could literally do over your lunch hour. You will need to first do some research so you’ll know the value of those “treasures” you find.
Set up computers
There are dozens if not hundreds of people who would like to have computers but are afraid to try to set them up. You could charge to do this and then “multiply” your income by teaching them how to do email, set up spreadsheets and do word processing.
Be a medical transcriptionist
If you’re a fast (and accurate) typist, you could sign up with one of the companies that specialize in transcribing audio tapes or disks from doctors and clinics into written reports.
Bake your way into extra money
If you’re good at baking cakes, pies and cupcakes, you could offer to make them for local coffee shops, restaurants or delis. You might even be able to sell them in office break rooms. You might laugh at this idea but it’s how Paula Deen got started.
